MICHELLE DOUGLAS’ “THE NANNY WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS”: LONELY TOGETHER

RATING GUIDE:

5 – A keeper!
4 – Very good
3 –  Passable
2 –  I’d rather read a telephone book
1 – An absolute bomb.  Read at your own risk!

I’m usually icked out by romances that happen between a female and her male boss.  I find myself cringing whenever I read stories where a female is pursued by her male boss and gives her all sorts of expensive gifts to show her he “cares”.  Somehow, these types of stories remind me of gold-diggers who sleep with their bosses to save them from their (usually financial) problems and be part of high society.  However, this story really surprised me, for this is the first boss-subordinate romance that didn’t gross me out.

“The Nanny Who Saved Christmas” is the story of Nicola, who gets dumped by her fiancé close to their wedding.  To make matters worse, Nicola is dumped in favor of her (gasp!) best friend!  How bad is that?

In an attempt to escape her heartache, Nicola takes on a temporary job as nanny.  Her boss is a gorgeous and rich businessman named Cade, who can’t understand why Nicola is so guarded towards him yet very loving to his children.

In time, Nicola and Cade open up to each other about their sad love stories.  Nicola learns that just like her, Cade was also betrayed by the love of his life.  Meanwhile, Cade learns about Nicola’s backstabbing fiancé and best friend, and agrees to help her in her makeover/revenge scheme by helping her lose weight and being her fake date to the wedding.

Unlike other romances that seem more like Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous combined with sex tutorials, this is a romance that actually seems very real.  The characters can be anyone we know, including ourselves.  As for Cade, while he possesses attributes that make him a typical romance hunk (rich, gorgeous), it is actually his character and personality that make him very lovable.  Aren’t you just tired of romantic heroes who do nothing except flaunt their looks, their wealth and their sexual prowess?  I am.  It’s truly a breath of fresh air to read about a rich, gorgeous hunk who is also sensitive and generous.

Douglas’ story just affirms that a good romance doesn’t really require a whole lot of passion and hot sex, just a whole lot of honesty and heart.  A must-have.

RATING:  4 1/2
